10.08.2021 Exploring the limits of light–matter coupling at the nanoscale

In nanophotonic devices, light and matter can be coupled in ways that give rise to new quantum phenomena. Theoretical and experimental work now establishes that are physical limits to just how strong light–matter coupling can be made in such systems.

15.07.2021 New appointments at EPFL

Dr Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus (*1988), currently Postdoctoral Researcher at Harvard University, USA, as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Electrical and Micro Engineeringin the School of Engineering. Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus conducts research into photonics with an emphasis on the development of transducers for terahertz and sub-terahertz frequencies. Her work has applications in areas that include metrology, THz frequency control and THz signal generation. Ileana-Cristina Benea-Chelmus is well known for her innovative ideas in the wider field of nanotechnology. Her research, both fundamental and applied, presents a remarkable opportunity for EPFL and will have significant implications for new optical technologies.

Congratulations to Dr. Ileana Cristina Benea Chelmus for winning the METAS Metrology Prize at the 2019 SPS Meeting, "for her excellent work in terahertz quantum optics with ultra short pulses".

19.07.2019: Young Researcher Award

Kudos to Gian Lorenzo Paravicini for winning the Young Researcher Award at the 21st International Conference on Electron Dynamics in Semiconductors, Optoelectronics and Nanostructures for the paper "Magneto-transport in 2DEG ultrastrongly coupled to a cavities vacuum-field". Congratulations for this outstanding result!

12.07.2019: The THz QCL is getting hotter

Thanks to a strong optimization of the 2-well design of the THz Quantum Cascade Laser, Faist team overcame the "barrier" of the 200 K and managed to operate a THz QCL up to 210.5 K as shown in a external pagerecently published paper. The paper has also been cited by Optics & Photonics news at the following external pagelink.

25.06.2019: 2019 EPS-QEOD Thesis Prize for fundamental aspects

The Quantum Electronics and Optics division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society (EPS) assigned the prestigious EPS-QOED Thesis Prize for fundamental aspects to Ileana Cristina Benea-Chelmus for the outstanding results on "Terahertz quantum optics with ultra-short pulses" she achieved during her PhD in our group. 20.01.2017: ETH medal for Gustavo Villares

Congratulations to Gustavo Villares, who received the ETH medal for this Ph.D. thesis on QCL combs for spectroscopy applications. The medal is awarded by the rector of ETH for outstanding theses.

19.12.2016: Giacomo Scalari receives ERC consolidator grant

Giacomo Scalari will use his ERC Consolidator Grant to create on-chip, self-referenced frequency combs operating in the THz spectral range, where there is currently no compact comb source available. These devices will be appealing for metrology and material inspection, non-invasive imaging for medical applications, and wireless communication. Giacomo is one of three recipients of an ERC consolidator grant at ETH.

30.06.2016: Conference paper price at "New Terahertz Sources and Emerging Applications"

The award of the "Rank Prize Funds" at the symposium "New Teraherrtz Sources and Emerging Applications" for "Best short paper" was awarded to Faist group Ph.D. student Markus Rösch. The symposium took place 13.06-16.06 in Grasmere, UK.

01.06.2016: Recent work on THz QCL combs highlighted in Nature Photonics

The recent Faist group publication external pageAppl. Phys Lett. 108, 171104 (2016) got highlighted by Nature Photonics: "Now, Markus Rösch and colleagues from ETH Zurich have developed an on-chip THz dual-comb set-up that does not require a fast detector. Two THz QCLs were processed next to each other by dry-etching techniques on the same chip and connected individually to two current sources."
